Books are a luxury item in low-income households

Many East Texas children do not own a book or have books in their homes. For most low-income families, parents’ work to provide basic needs such as shelter, food and transportation. Books are a luxury item in these households.

Children without access to books fall behind

Test scores show that children who have access to books have higher test scores and stay in school. Children without access to books, especially in the summer, fall behind and are less likely to develop the critical early foundation and skills needed to be successful in life.
